Dirk Quinn Band
Dirk Quinn is a Philadelphia based guitarist who has utilized nearly a decade of steady performing to develop a unique and progressive style – one that sits somewhere between jazz, funk and rock. Initially attracted to the guitar as a teenager after being introduced to classic rock giants such as Led Zeppelin and The Who, Quinn’s thirst for the unique and bizarre soon had him jamming along to the more radical and daring Mahavishnu Orchestra and the humorous, bass-laden noise of Primus. Playing virtually non-stop with countless musical projects afforded him ample opportunity to hone his chops.
Cronus
Cronus started with the founding members, Matt and Casey, writing songs in a mini studio. The songs and ideas seemed to meet at an organic, but very rock oriented approach. From that day on the band Cronus was born.
The style is an eclectic mix of the minds with various influences. Whether it be soulful southern style leads, or indie/progressive rock, to funk and r&b, to blues and jazz.
A Monday evening full of jam, just for you… See you there!
Categorization be damned, the Madison-based five piece, Steez, consisting of Matt Williams (keyboards/synthesizers/accordion), Steve Neary (guitar and vocals), Rob Bessert (drums), Chris Sell (bass), and Andrzej Benkowski (saxophone, oboe, and violin) is — in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions – a funk band, a jamband, a fusion band, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case.
Churning out their self-described Creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities – Steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the Midwest. After receiving repeated acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Genialistid (Estonia), Steez hit the studio and released their first full length album, Creepfunk Crusade, in August 09 with independent label, Mason Jar Records.
Hoping to carve out a niche in the competitive jamband landscape, what really sets Steez apart is the camaraderie and endearing sense of humor. The band’s humble beginnings include getting banned for life from a venue after their first ever live performance, maneuvering a moped accident involving a parked car, and cruising the Midwest in the inspired 35 foot band bus, “Big Brown.” While it’s the original songs and taut musicianship that initially grab both fans’ and critics’ attention, the band’s personality keeps it.
Steez is currently enjoying success from their debut album which has been nominated for Home Grown Music Network’s album of the year, the album charted on both the Homegrown Music Network Radio Charts and the Jambands.com Radio Charts, peaking at #19 and #23, respectively. Steez was featured in the December 09 issue of Relix as an band “on the verge,” and most recently Steez was named one of the 10 most influential bands to come out of Madison in the last decade. The band is again poised to hop on the bus and build upon the success they’ve garnered from grinding it out on the road.

Ohio-grown Jones For Revival formed in 2004. Since the beginning, the band’s goal has been to re-introduce the improvisational aspect of music into groovy, upbeat tunes that audiences of all ages could enjoy. Throughout the journey, they’ve strengthened their ability to project a positive vibe to their listeners and have gained a following of loyal fans who share the same musical understanding and appreciation as they do.
Jones has worked with quality acts like Keller Williams, Tea Leaf Green, BoomBox, The Bridge, Ekoostik Hookah, Toubab Krewe, Blue Oyster Cult, Jerry DePizzo of O.A.R., and Zach Deputy. The band also has their own annual music festival – JONESFEST – held at Ohio’s famous Nelson Ledges Quarry Park.
Join us “on the Hill” tonight for the last CDW show of the summer, make way for another Messy side project soon..

From the foothills of Appalachia a new musical combo has appeared; grown from seeds of the folk, blues, and bluegrass found abundant in the Carolinas, yet shaped by the undeniable power of rock and roll. Known as The New Familiars, these five gentlemen combine an amazing passion for harmony with multi-instrumental talent and unusual storytelling abilities.
Currently touring in support of their six-song EP ‘The Storm’ and a recently released 7″ vinyl (featuring their original tune ‘Mill’s River’ with a re-interpretation of Smokey Robinson’s classic ‘My Girl’), they’ve taken the east coast music scene by force. Drawing raucous club crowds from Boston to Tuscaloosa while shining bright on the festival circuit grace of a fresh and distinct new sound, the buzz about the band is palpable and growing.
While describing their songwriting as “folk music from the core”, the band has constantly stretched the boundaries of ‘genre labels’. Since their debut in late 2006, they’ve fused the multitudes of musical influences that each member brings to the table onto a foundation built upon traditional instruments such as resonator guitar, mandolin, banjo and harmonica. Yet glimpses of new material hint towards even broader musical horizons while still maintaining – and even reinforcing – the unique sound that has so defined the band.
All this, most especially when combined with their intense live performances, serve as signs pointing to one very clear statement: The New Familiars are a powerful swell in a new wave of honest, roots-derived rock music sweeping the nation.

The Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories between blues and bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stompin’ fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but whistle their own tunes, layering in rich textures and decidedly modern energy to forge a new sound.
They fit best among musicians like Langhorne Slim, Gillian Welch, or Adrienne Young and Little Sadie (with whom they’ve shared the stage) – deft musicians making a name for themselves by creating their own particular permutation of traditional forms. Yet the Steel Wheels share much with new Americana favorites like the Avett Brothers or Old Crow Medicine Show, with charisma that causes toes to tap and heads to nod, audiences hanging on their every word. Like those bands, The Steel Wheels have broad appeal. And they count among their fans former Statler Brother Jimmy Fortune and indie folk darlings Over the Rhine.
The four-piece band is based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where multi-instrumentalist Jay Lapp was born and took inspiration from church hymns and folk fests, and where Trent Wagler has been a scene staple for nearly a decade. Lapp was touring with several successful Midwest bands when he and Wagler crossed paths in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and a musical partnership began. The two are joined by upright bassist Brian Dickel and fiddler Eric Brubaker to form the Steel Wheels. The band shines exceptionally in their live shows, and their palpable chemistry translates easily to Red Wing. Just listen to the exceptional four-part harmonies that support and accentuate Wagler’s scratchy tenor, which has been compared to that of Darrel Scott. Brubaker’s fiddle, both lively and evocative, suits the band exactly, and Dickel’s upright bass grounds the outfit. Jay Lapp’s signature mandolin style is remarkable and unmistakable.
The Steel Wheels have built a following from the East Coast to the Midwest and beyond, appearing at Americana festivals such as the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Festival, Floydfest, Folk Alliance, and Appalachian Uprising. Wagler and Lapp also regularly take a duo show to Ireland and have appeared with Peter Rowan at the ‘Ards International Guitar Festival.
In keeping with their music that takes a traditional idea on a modern adventure, Wagler and Lapp’s organized a week-long, 300-mile bicycle tour last year. Not only did they pedal themselves through the mountains of Virginia to seven gigs in seven days, they hauled their own gear the whole way, with one bicycle custom-framed for travel and another fitted with a trailer. It’s one more example that with inherent skill and energy, trust in the value of simplicity and a marked talent for taking something old-fashioned and making it relevant for today is one of The Steel Wheels’ greatest strengths.

The Stone Sugar Shakedown, a 4-piece band from her in St. Louis, blends earth-rooted, traditional music and contemporary, spacious sounds. Their multi-dimensional music and live performance captivates the listener and creates a funk-filled atmosphere, both sonically and visually. The experience celebrates art and spirit. Its core consists of Ryan Benthall (bass), Nicholas Elwood (guitar/vocals), Tracy Gladden (vocals/percussion), and Ben Walters (drums/percussion). Before coming together, each member was involved with other musical projects. Now, The Shakedown is performing around St. Louis and getting ready to hit the road for Summer Camp Music Festival this May. They’re passionate about creation and crafting a rejuvenating atmosphere to share with the crowd. Their self-recorded, self-produced debut EP is due this summer as well.

Since 2003, Illinois-based singer-songwriter Dan Hubbard has released four albums and toured extensively through the Midwest and both coasts. In the process, he’s built a strong fan base, become a refined songwriter and earned critical acclaim for his efforts. With its foundation in the classic sounds of Tom Petty, Van Morrison, Neil Young and Jackson Browne, Hubbard’s music incorporates folk, country, blues and even a little funk. With a dynamic and powerful voice, Hubbard carries songs of love, loss and soul searching (and occasionally getting drunk enough to forget it all). Like the influential front-men before him, Hubbard delivers a message that people can relate to in good times and bad.
In 2008, the Humadors joined Hubbard on the road. That fall, they released their acclaimed self-titled debut- a collection of songs showcasing graceful lyrics, vibrant melodies and innovative sound. Dan Hubbard and the Humadors expect to release a new album this summer.

Los Angeles-based artist Jeremiah (Sammartano) and the Red Eyes started in the Southern California coffeehouses and bars, picking up sounds and ideas along the way and later mixed them up with the song ideas in his head. What came out was a blend of the Delta Blues and old folk songs, Tom Waits and the Replacements, some Willie Nelson twang and some good old garage rock and roll – and a whole lot of other things..
Bob’s Scratchy Showcase is Bob Reuter’s new monthly music review featuring several unique live performers and special guests. LUCE (San Francisco, CA) will also be performing an early show from 8-9pm.
Ashley Raines grew up in the Midwest and began running away from home almost as early as he could walk. By the age of fourteen he was hitchhiking from his home in Kansas to Oklahoma City. He hopped boxcars and taught himself any instrument he could get his hands on, recording his songs on four-track reel-to-reel machines which he sold while performing on the street. Raines has released seven studio albums and one live album.
Young St.Louis singer/songwriter Riley James sings with a voice worn by whiskey and late nite wanderings. He brought his hardscrabble, acoustic tunes to the interstate for a live session. Sounds “like a dead-end road…”
Salvation has the general meaning of liberation from straitened circumstances or from other evils, and of a translation into a state of freedom and security. Jason Sipe and Shannon Kiel use experimental rock & pop music to express themselves, and they’ve relocated to where it all started for them musically: St. Louis, MO.
Luce’s history reaches back to 2001. Their first record, which was self titled, gained immediate attention on Bay Area radio stations such as San Francisco’s KFOG. The album’s single, “Good Day” was soon picked up in Hollywood and appeared in movies such as How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and 13 Going On 30, and on television shows like The O.C. and Alias. In 2003, Luce earned the California Music Award for “Outstanding Debut Album.” In order to continue promoting the album the band fervently toured the US playing alongside bands like Sixpence, None The Richer and Goo Goo Dolls.

If it takes a village to raise a child, George Stathakes must have had some really weird neighbors. Raised in Gardendale, AL, a small conservative suburb of Birmingham, Stathakes was exposed at a young age to a blend of Cat Stevens and traditional Greek music by his mother and weaned on a steady diet of outlaw country singers like George Jones and Johnny Cash by his father.
His lyrical prowess reflects his biting sarcasm and wit, but there are still hints of something sinister lurking beneath, like the villains he idolized as a child, with the role-playing and theatrics of the Phantom of the Opera. However, his youth and curiosity still render his present songwriting form a constantly shape-shifting entity, a voracious beast that consumes anything tasty in its path. Be sure to hear him while he’s at his hungriest.
Every first Saturday of the month Irene invades Pop’s Blue Moon to play folk music and tell stories. If you’ve never seen her show, it’s always entertaining, always worth the stop.

Their style is best described as pop-folk/folk-rock and they have been compared to Sarah McLachlan, Patty Griffin and Neil Young. Jenn plays keyboards, has powerful vocals and her sound is a mix of Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, if you will..

Tom Goss offers up dynamic acoustic rock featuring muscular guitar, hooky melodies and a uniquely powerful voice. If the 26-year-old has any patron saints, they are Jack Johnson, Damien Rice, Ben Folds, and Joss Stone. Since April 2006, when he released his self-produced debut, Naked Without, Tom has played scores of coffeehouses, bars, gay pride festivals and other events—honing his skills along the way.
With the January 2008 release of his second CD, Rise, Tom demonstrates just how far he’s come. The six songs showcase his stylistic flexibility, from the urgent growl of “Morning Sun” to the sweet and unadorned “King of Something Right.” The recent music video for “Rise” barreled its way to #2 on MTV’s LOGO and stuck around 8 weeks.
Kort McCumber weaves a rich and diverse tapestry of musical experience, skill and energy into each and every one of his many musical endeavors. A classically trained pianist & cellist (he learned from his mom, Joy Myers, who played for the Jacksonville Symphony for more than two decades) today Kort plays guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, piano, bouzouki, cello, bass, and more. He’s back in the studio this year with a “really exciting project for me,” as he says. “Not quite as country as the last record – a little more back to my folk roots. Of course I’ll still play the country and bluegrass live. I love that stuff. But the time is right to record some other stuff, a little more social commentary and a little more direct to the times.”
Join us at the moon to celebrate Josip’s Birthday. Many local musicians should be stopping through the Hill to throwdown with Pop’s Blue Moon’s favorite bassist. More info TBA…
She Swings, She Sways coalesced in the only apartment building in downtown Ottumwa, Southeast Iowa’s post-industrial wasteland, when an acoustic duo (John Gordon & Cory Canny) met long-time drums and bullfiddle rhythm section (Jason Bolinger & Troy Morgan). Drawing on over 30 years of combined experience, the band began writing, recording, and performing in 2005. In 2007, the band added two new players—Wes VanAntwerp and Diana Garles. Since then, She Swings, She Sways has spent almost every minute together – sharing a house and completing five tours of the Midwest, playing over 200 shows. Their travels have resulted in many new friends and fans; a few broken hearts; and the rescue of Sassafras, a horse stuck in a frozen Kansas pond. And even though the road can be hard, they’re always able to find a girl’s bed to sleep in (though she may not be in it), and her mom usually makes them muffins in the morning.
When the band is asked what “style” of music that they play, a common answer is “Midwestern” music. She Swings, She Sways’ range of influences is wide, combining rocking two-beat stomp, soulful lovelorn lyrics, and lilting pop melodies.
She Swings, She Sways is very proud of their Iowa roots. Still, they all hope to soon leave home for the long haul and take their music anywhere they can find a meal, a bed, and some open ears.

Formed in 2009, Waiting on John is composed of John Grigaitis-vocals/guitar, Ryan Petroline-bass/vocals, Shane Kessinger-percussion, Tom Kessinger-guitar/vocals and Tommy Chester-guitar/vocals. With a smooth mix of alternative and rock being their main sound, they have many original songs and music in addition to the covers they perform. Their greatest musical influences would be The Beatles, Rush and STP, though there are many others. The members of Waiting on John all live in or around the Alton, IL area ~ small town boys with big town sound.
Lojo’s band history reflects her style of music – a little bit of everything. She’s played bass in a psychedelic jam band, mandolin in a Celtic group and guitar in every kind of funk, folk, jazz, and jam combination you can imagine. Through it all she combines her sense of music with her sense of humor – sometimes outrageous, sometimes intense, always original.

The sound and soul of The Northwoods is both familiar yet new. Listen carefully and you will hear echoes of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and James Taylor as they collide with the 21st century. Elijah Palnik and Jeremy Shanas are taking American music in a new direction. The Northwoods restore the beauty of poetry to its rightful place in today’s music through rich, soulful vocal harmonies and an occasional dose of funky, percussive rhythms.
“They sing about a hope surrounding life and an optimism that never dies, not even with youth. Shanas and Palnik are bringing a force and vitality to folk music that hasn’t been heard in decades.”

Drawing on the sounds of Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, and CSNY, Annie and the Beekeepers is a folk and country inspired trio that met at Berklee College of Music in December 2006. When Annie Lynch (lead vocal, guitar), Ken Woodward (upright bass), and Alexandra Spalding (cello, vocals) first began playing together in living rooms and basements around Boston, the mysterious disappearance of bee colonies throughout the world was receiving a great deal of attention in the media. The Bee has long been a symbol for hard work and community, and the Beekeepers were inspired to preserve and promote those same qualities by way of music and their role in the music community.

“As I progressively grounded myself into the world of sound-art, I felt a passion in the making. Even as a beginner I understood that if you weren’t putting a bit of your own self into the music, then you’re missing the point. As each day of music brought the same dream closer and closer, the once seemingly unattainable was now becoming likely. I like music.”

“Have you ever been handed a cocktail and upon taking a sip, sputtered, choked, and let loose with a “WHOO!” You were expecting a smooth Captain & Coke, but what you got was Wild Turkey? That’s the deep-down straight-to-the-gut burn I experienced when I first listened to the new Greyhounds album, Liberty. I’ve been familiar with the band and their loose, laid-back soul-jazz groove for several years, so imagine my surprise when I was greeted with a much dirtier, more rockin’ sound than I’d ever expect from this young Texas trio.”
- Gina Figliuolo, jambase.com

“Cronus is a jam/vintage style rock band out to preserve rock n’ roll for the 21st century. Their sound can be compared to Allman Brothers and late 60’s and 70′ Kinks with dashes of Santana and other 60’s SF Bay Area nuggets. Elastik Soul is a groove oriented funk and jazz group formed here in St. Louis. The band consisted of Pete Lombardo on guitar and vocals, Teddy Brookins on bass, and Grover Stewart on drums until 2007 when Chris Stevenson on keyboards was added. Their sound is described as soulful grooves with an in your face funk sound and a strong jazz influence. The group has opened for such noted artists as Jeff Coffin, Roy Wooten, Karl Denson, and Felix Pastorius, among others. Elastik Soul’s influences range from John Scofield, Soulive, Victor Wooten, Joshua Redman, among others.

“Once split between Austin and St. Louis, BROTHERS LAZAROFF is now firmly established in the river city. Jeff and David Lazaroff are the songwriting and harmonizing brothers of the band, but a crack rhythm section of drummer Grover Stewart and bassist Teddy Brookins, as well as virtuoso keyboards by Mo Egeston, expand the sound beyond just twangy roots. Their latest album, American Artifact, features psychedelic and indie rock elements, while deepening the brothers’ original songwriting. But one listen– with its stinging and expressive pedal steel, plaintive melodies, waltz and shuffle rhythms and close harmonies — makes clear its affection for and mastery of American roots idioms. It’s a connection that has served the band well as it’s built an audience in Austin, Texas, where brother David has lived over the last ten years. This year the brothers decided to bring it all back home to St. Louis and have put together one of the more striking, tight and steady bands in town.”

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has its roots in London’s early 2000s UK garage scene. Musically, dubstep is distinguished by its 2step rhythm, or use of snare sounds similar to 2step garage and grime, and an emphasis on bass, often producing “dark” sounds, but just as frequently producing sounds reminiscent of dub reggae or funky US garage.

“I believe in songs and I believe in communication.” says Army Of Me singer Vince Scheuerman. It’s simple, and it’s evident in the music of Army Of Me. It’s all about the songs. And Army of Me’s debut CITIZEN speaks those songs from the heart, with the feeling that less is more. It’s more reminiscent of early Oasis or The Verve, and R.E.M than quirkily trendy indie pop, as Army of Me continues to build from their humble Washington DC indie roots.
“Perhaps the Mumlers were channeling the spirit of William Mumler, a mid-19th-century man famous for claiming he could photograph ghosts, but once all [six] band members touched their fingers to a Ouija board’s planchette, the board, they claim, spelled out their group’s name. Regardless, it’s clear their swaggered ruckus pop channels dead folk musicians galore. Despite the ghostly origins of their handle, the Mumlers’ live appearances tend to turn into lively celebrations, with the outfit dancing about the stage. Their repertoire of instruments rivals any philharmonic’s and includes guitars, drums, upright bass, various keyboards, euphonium, French horn, trumpet, clarinet, tambourine, pedal steel, and recently, eagle whistles from Mexico.” -Alex Felsinger, San Francisco Bay Guardian

“Braden Land is a radioactive spyship in disguise. He may not be a household name (yet), but it would be wise to get this potent singer songwriter on your radar now. His steady acoustic guitar, occasionally layered with harmonica, is full enough to accompany land’s killer vocals, which are somewhere along the lines of ring round the rosie with dylan, townes van zandt and lowell george.”

Ask The Ragbirds how to describe their hard-to-define Folk Rock and World fusion and they’ll tell you it’s “infectious global groove”. Led by fiery front-woman Erin Zindle (called “Highly Impressive” by USA TODAY), they put on a show that is designed to engage the audience on many levels – to get people thinking, listening and dancing. As the band’s founder and songwriter, Zindle is like a bright excited tour guide through a beautiful foreign world of sights and sounds.
The musical roots of The Ragbirds sound are complex – with Gypsy, Middle-Eastern, Americana, Rock, and Latin influences, all stirred with a Celtic fiddler’s bow. In live performances the band incorporates variations on traditional African drum pieces, each member trading their instrument for a hand drum. The Ragbirds craft their songs carefully weaving joy and hope into honest lyrics, while keeping an ear always open to improvisation.”

“Tommy Halloran performs old-timey music anyone would appreciate, but as is often the case, his savvy draws many unusual folks. Tommy, on a first-name basis with practically anyone cool in Saint Louis, has always hung on the fringes. He is to jazz as Uncle Tupelo was to country-western or Steve Earle to bluegrass. He possesses the schooling (both formal and hard-knocks) as well as the “chops” of a great jazzman… The basic truths of Delta-blues, swing, Gospel, and Bohemia are deeply rooted in Tommy’s songwriting psyche. Like Randy Newman or Tom Waits (who seldom appear in the same sentence), his cooking belies his ingredients. He may not be “Chasin’ the Bird”, but he’s certainly flippin’ the bird as a top-rate improviser. In this aspect at least, Tommy embodies the original spirit of jazz. His blues, his bounce, and his ballads rival great musicians from any era.”

Lucas Paine
Lucas Paine was born an army brat in North Carolina, but the family moved north, and he grew up in Alaska; fishing camps and boats during the summer, playing music and trying to stay warm in winter. Lucas likes trees and snow, high places, warm nights, and cold, salty water. There are birds and lions in his music.

Bob Kaat-Wholert: Guitars and all things good!
Sean Renner: Guitar, Vocals, Keys

Sean Renner
Creating music that his listeners describe as Acoustic/Electronic Experimentation, Renner pushes the limits of the acoustic singer/songwriter paradigm, but yet remains accessible, personal and intimate. His influences range from Radiohead to Beethoven, Bjork to Sufjan Stevens, and he elegantly displays each in a creative blend of musical and technical prowess. Playing the roles of musician, producer, and engineer he completed four full length albums, three EPs, and scores for several short films including a piece for the film “Love Overdue,” winner of the Best Original Score award at the 2005 Greensboro 48-hour Film Competition.

“It is the dawn of an age of digital wizardry where gadgets seem to surge in song, congealing in an amalgamation of buzzes, beeps and blips. The pulsing of machines and pounding of concrete and steel in symphonic collage power our world. J.Wail rises to the call of the sonic traffic controller, poised behind a palette of electronic devices with his Telecaster in hand. The dance floor becomes the launch pad where he fuses live instrumentation with organic electronica propelling mind, soul and booty into the upper stratosphere of sound. Lucas Cook plays a funky blend of pop-rock-americana. Whether with his band ‘the Collection’, or solo-acoustic, Lucas always puts on a high energy, fun show. The original music is a progressive rock blending pop, rock, blues, funk, soul, hip-hop. Just when you think it couldn’t get more eclectic, the boy drops a song completely in Spanish. ¡Simon! After two years and hundreds of shows as the front man for Austin’s LUCASCOOKUS, Lucas took a step back to focus energy on the direction of his career. Now, in the writing stages of a full length album Lucas plans to work with producer Dave Percefull of Yellow Dog/ 5am studios in Austin.

A new musical combo has been touring the east coast playing honest, folk-infused rock and roll. Known as The New Familiars, these five gentlemen combine an amazing passion for harmony and collaborative songwriting with multi-instrumental talent.

Millie of Music for Plants had been performing solo for some time and decided she wanted something more. She then went in search of a band. She tabbed Greg Turner, a very gifted multi-instrumentalist as her lead guitarist. However, she still needed some meat and potatoes to fill out the sound. Similarly, the Meramec Cannonball and Story were musical free agents, having been a rhythm section for over a year for three different songwriters and were looking for something new. They heard Millie’s solo work, were equally impressed, and signed on soon after, thus completing the group as you now see and hear it.

Toting the loaded description sci-fi Middle Eastern funk, New York City’s CONSIDER THE SOURCE is excited to announce the release of their highly-anticipated 3rd album, “Are You Watching Closely,” a follow up to 2007’s celebrated release “Esperanto.” With Jazz Times’ Howard Mandel calling them “the future of music,” and sharing a stage with Wyclef Jean and Klezmer great Andy Statman, the band is ready to tour with new musical perspectives—futuristic in it’s own respect. They blend heavy, sludgy rock with jazz-fusion, Middle Eastern sounds and calculated, complex time signatures.
What has developed over the years is a frenzied but controlled musical atmosphere, where improvisation is the highlight of their live shows—alongside their mathematical rhythm section. Marin’s fretless, double-neck guitar pours all over the musical climate, while the bass’ funk dances over the pounding drums. The blend draws everyone in. “Are You Watching Closey” is set to expand on their already progressive palette.

This Frontier Needs Heroes is the American Folk duo of brother and sister Brad and Jessica Lauretti from Brooklyn NY. Formed in 2007, when Brad’s band broke up, his sister Jessica suggested that she play drums for him. He told her she wasn’t good enough. So she learned how to play tambourine, harmonica, ukulele, harp, and sing! Stripped down, lyrically driven, and influenced by the whole American catalog from Soul to Country, The Heroes outlaw revolutionary style is social commentary and an emotional blueprint for navigating through these wild times! Now on tour across the US and Europe in support of their self released debut record, available on itunes in July, they are searching for mind blowing experiences of heroic proportions!
“The emotional empathy between siblings who play music together usually carries about as much weight as a Nelson CD. But brother-sister duo Brad and Jessica Lauretti, known collectively as This Frontier Needs Heroes, adds much more credence to the whole idea. With harmonies so tight they sound like they come from a single larynx, the act crafts a shuffling, aching Americana that taps deep into the whole back-porch vibe that folk music ought to exude—but not without a tinge of The Band and Will Oldham to help modernize it.” – Decider.com
“Arresting local neofolk duo This Frontier Needs Heroes combines spare, literate songs in a Neil Young vein with hints of homegrown psychedelia” – Time Out NY
“This Frontier Needs Heroes croons heartbreaking folk…This Frontier Needs Heroes quietly explode all of your notions about cheesy family bands.” – Time OUt NY
“This Frontier Needs Heroes makes music that’s warm and organic-sounding without resorting to any of the standard alt-folk singer/songwriter cliches. ” – East Village Radio
“Dangerous Brooklyn Folk Duo” – Olympia
“Brother Sister Country Folk Killers” – Los Angeles
“Gorgeous stripped down folk” – Massachusetts

Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut and currently residing in Philadelphia, Bad Apples is a rock/funk trio consisting of James Albis (Fender Rhodes, Moog, saxophone), BJ Felsted (bass), and Dave Witter (drums). Drawing on such influences as Steely Dan, David Bowie, and Talking Heads, Bad Apples continue to impress every new ear that hears them with their catchy melodies, lively harmonies, and tight grooves.
The band has been touring steadily throughout the northeast since the September 2007 release of their debut album, Home, while sharing the stage with national acts such as Blind Melon, Bill Kreutzmann of The Grateful Dead, The Breakfast and funk legends Tower of Power. Home showcases Bad Apples’ versatility – from their acute pop sensibility in “Danny Movefastly” to their jazz chops in “Jackpot” to their ability to rock in “What Makes You Go” and “Days” – while paying homage to the place where they grew up and the people that were closest to them. Further testament to their artistic range is a guest appearance by rapper Black Child of The Inc. Records (formerly known as Murder, Inc.) in “Moses Poses: Private Eye.” Brian Tucker of Bootleg Magazine says that “Home represents Bad Apples refining their sound and serving as a peek into their future as a dynamic rock band.”

“You should download a few ditties from the dandies, Lord T & Eloise, the world’s first purveyors of Aristocrunk.”-VH1’s BEST WEEK EVER; “Immensely clever.” -SPIN MAGAZINE; “Better than most of the rap I hear these days…polished, unique, and catchy as hell…funny, relevant, and original.” – THE SAN FRANSISCO BAY GUARDIAN

The Spacetones are an independent intergalactic hip-hop trio from the vast tundras of Springfield, Missouri. Tahmipee (Rhymes) and Casey (Beats) got together in February of 2006 and began work on their first LP, “Serving You Something Tasty,” which is available for free. In late 2007, DJ Geeg was added to lineup to provide some sick cuts and add to the Spacetones’ live experience. The three are currently working on a follow-up record which promises to bring the spaciest grooves to ever come out of Springfield.
The group uses no computers in the creation of their music, relying solely on drum machines, samplers, turntables, and occasionally live instrumentation to exhibit their unique sound. A Spacetones live show is both energetic and funkalicious, often interweaving abstract samples and obscure recordings with crowd pleasing jams and dancefloor tracks.

Thumpasaurus drops chronic dinosaur beats and gets all prehistoric..

The band is Tim Frank (vocals/guitar) former circus child-star until a cannonball mishap in 1994; Blake Wells (bass) a judge at the annual “Little People, Big Words: Spelling Bee for Dwarfs” competition; Eli P. (drums) who thinks underwear is unnecessary since no one sees it in the first place; Jessica Lyons (back-up vocals) who denies the exsitence of Wyoming; and Doug Waxman (lead guitar) who got fired from The Gap for not washing his hands after eating an entire bag of Doritos for lunch. “Undeniably strong pop songwriting and genuinely witty lyrics” -Jim DeRogatis, Chicago Sun-Times

A Zoogma show combines the sonic diversity and precision of a DJ with the excitement and immediacy of a five piece rock group. Known for their energetic performances and retina pleasing light show, Zoogma consistently dishes out heavy-weight beat-driven dance parties across the nation. Sets are kinetic, combining carefully crafted beats and melodic textures so that one can’t help but get out on the dance-floor.
Americana, Folk, Indie

She Swings She Sways – When the band is asked what “style” of music that they play, a common answer is “Midwestern” music. She Swings, She Sways’ range of influences is wide, combining rocking two-beat stomp, soulful lovelorn lyrics, and lilting pop melodies.
“Basically, we steal the best elements of the music we like and when the six of us play together, it just comes out kind of sounding like us” says Cory Canny. “We’ve been described as Americana, folk, pop, indie, and polka. I’m pretty certain that the older gentleman who described us as ‘polka’ was heavily medicated at the time, because he also insisted that he was my real dad.”-SSSS

When you need a soundtrack for a life full of sweet sadness accompanied by the unwavering happiness that is within us all, you need look no further than “The Big Idea.” Singing songs from the heart about lost loves, growing up, and rambunctious quarter-life antics; Tommy Main and Will Montgomery don’t just sing the words on the page… they live them. Together, the two set out to use their knowledge of acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, drums, and everything else under the sun to come up with a live show that is bigger than the two alone. Whether playing to a crowded bar full of rowdy patrons, or to the quiet atmosphere of the quaintest coffee shop, “The Big Idea” is at home in any venue big or small with a live show to match any environment. As Will says, “The Big Idea” isn’t just a band, it’s an idea that we have. The idea that two guys can play two instruments and make the people move…move them on the floor first and foremost…but hopefully by the end of the night, move them into rethinking what they want out of live music. It’s an idea that songs from the heart and the soul should always beat out the radio songs.” -TBI

The Blackberry Bushes is a love story of pickers, singers, songwriters, strummers, and stompers. Friends came together to make songs, because they loved them, and they loved each other. We live in a world of work. In this world of work, we need a place to play. This is why people are talking. The Blackberry Bushes can really play.
In bars, cafes, galleries, radio stations, festivals, acoustic houses, private events and street corners, they play. They play their songs with love, sincerity, dedication and jubilation. Kendl Winter and Jes Raymond write songs of breath, habits, birds and bog beings. They bring their love of bluegrass, old-time, and indie rock, pass it through their hearts and clever minds and voila…a music for you that sounds like something you have never heard, but always known.

Bando Trio does their thing every Tuesday, performing many genres including folk, blues, jazz and more. Many other musicians and bands join the lineup for an evening of eclectic tunes.

Pert’ Near Sandstone is a new-timey stringband from Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, established in 2003. They play hard-driving acoustic music in the old-time vein, but with a fresh sense and new-time urban grit. Pert Near approaches the American stringband tradition with reverence, infusing their own ideas and character to deliver a sound and style uniquely their own. In Pert Near’s songwriting there is as much depth and diversity (and often quirkiness) as their traditional material. You’ll find this group gathered around a single, old-timey microphone in a choreographed dance of lyric & melody regardless of being in a rock venue or a formal theater.
Joe and Vicki Price catapult energetic country blues. This is finger style guitar in the Elmore James/Muddy Waters tradition, a bit rough and tons of fun. Their music has been described as a righteous, joyful, foot-stomping jubilee. Joe has been performing his ruff and tumble blues for over 35 years; a one-man blues tornado who can pack, command and wring-out a dance-floor with the authority of an eight-piece show band.
Woodhands is dirty electronic music. We are interested in emotional, sweaty dance floors. We want to make you cry while you’re having sex, and it’ll be the best damn sex of your life. And you’ll be dancing. Woodhands started in a basement in Montreal, moved to Europe, and is now making love to Toronto and its environs.

Ain’t who you thought he was; is just who they say. He come around night-ish and sing news, new songs from the old country well, smile-spread and laughing. When’s the last time any stranger said hello to you, asked yr name, where you from? Troubadour, that’s the tradition. You might’a heard of it, these names like Guthrie, Mississippi John and, hell, even ol’ Mr. Garcia hisself. The ones ain’t take yr money and yr daughters. This one ain’t no easeman, no card man back-lit and high-handed. Tell you straight, hon.

Rogue Motel learned a lot about their group when they found themselves 2,380 miles away from home, living in a cheap hotel, eating bourbon for dinner, and spending every moment with a bunch of guys that were playing together for the very first time.

The sound and soul of The Northwoods is both familiar yet new. Listen carefully and you will hear echoes of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and James Taylor as they collide with the 21st century.
The Hatrick is a foot stomin’ hootin’ hollerin’ partygrass band. Every member of the Hatrick sings… every member plays percussion, mostly with their feet… and with their remaining limbs; they incorporate acoustic guitar, bass, mandolin, and harmonica, with a banjo emerging on a blue moon as well. Hailing from Columbia, MO, this 3-piece outfit is made up of a handful of members from area bands The HipNecks and Bockman.
Soul Captive is a Kansas City based reggae band determined to bring Roots-Reggae back to the foreground of Reggae Music. Gregory Isaacs has an influential presence in their music, and with a cultural mixture among band members, Soul Captive brings an energetic and relentless Reggae tone to their set.

Pop / Rock / Jam

Led by the energetic and fiery front woman and songwriter Erin Zindle, who skillfully switches between violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion, and percussion, in addition to singing lead vocals (all while dancing!) The Ragbirds musical roots are firmly embedded in the soil of rhythm, ancient and new, incorporating Americana, Gypsy, Celtic, and Latin influences with drums from all over the world, mixing African poly-rhythms and Afro-Cuban tumbao, over sometimes rock, hip-hop or reggae style drum-kit, all designed to get people both listening and up and dancing!

The Bottoms Up Blues Gang is a St. Louis Acoustic Blues Duo featuring vocalist Kari Liston and guitarist Jeremy Segel-Moss. The BUBG play a unique blend of originals and covers in the styles of Delta Blues, R & B, Soul, Jazz, and Blues influenced Rock & Roll.
For a duo, The Bottoms Up Blues Gang has a big sound. Kari’s powerfully sultry voice rings with soul intention while Jeremy holds down the groove covering bass lines and melody on his acoustic guitar. In the last year, Kari has also implemented several percussion instruments and an electric kazoo! while Jeremy has grown to be a solid harmonica player and singer.
The BUBG play with an ever-changing line up when performing in St. Louis. On any given night the band might include a stand up bass player, additional guitar, harmonica, piano, drums or all of the above. And if The BUBG isn’t playing at one of their own gigs, theres a good chance they’ll be out jammin with fellow St. Louis musicians.

Anna Vogelzang is unavoidably soulful. She has major vocals. She was a vocal major.
“Anna Vogelzang is one of the promising young female artists who puts her money where her mouth is. This girl won’t stop until she gets the attention she deserves, and believe me, she deserves it.” – Amanda Palmer, The Dresden Dolls

Two outlandish acoustic soloists performing Folk, Rock, Bluegrass, Funk
Jaik Willis’ 4-octave voice stretches out in vocal solos and scatting over his high-energy acoustic guitar work on original songs that are accessible and lyrically intriguing. The focus is on keeping the show fun for the audience. Jaik is an educated musician, having trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Illinois and California State Universities’ music departments, and in Hollywood’s Musician’s Institute as their youngest student when he was 16 years-old. He spent all of his teen-age years practicing 10-16 hours per day. After studying jazz and Euro-classical music, Jaik received an ethno-musicology/ anthropology degree with a thesis on microtonal guitar music from Mauritania. He is always seeking performance opportunities and new avenues forward for his music.
Sean Shiel is a solo acoustic performer based out of a small town in northern Illinois. Prominantly a guitar player and singer, Sean draws upon a lifetime of influences to produce a sound that is his own. This rootsy fusion of bluegrass, funk, folk, and a few made up words will surely get those toes a tappin’.

Folk, Blues, Rock, Grass

A unique blend of Bluegrass, New Grass, Acoustic Jazz and Original Material.
The sounds of Chloe Day are at once eclectic and entirely commercial, embarking on an adventurous trip of Rock, Pop, Electronica, Jazz, Trip-Hop, and acoustic Folk-Pop. The songs are a surrealistic dreamscape that embody love, lust, fear, loneliness, beginnings, endings, and a vintage scope of human dissolution.
Reelfoot Rift was formed in 2008 in Columbia Missouri. 3 Members of the St. Louis band Space Moose, and the ever so talented Ted Palleta joined together to form Reelfoot. They play everything groovy. Come watch them and dance. Jack Meyer Approved!
Naked Groove is no doubt one of St. Louis’ finest Rock, Reggae, Blues, Funk, Bluegrass, Jazz acts. They have been on the scene making peeps twirl and dance for years, and currently are sounding good as ever. Check them out where they started years ago, it always a good time with the groove in the house!

Floyd & The Barbers is bluegrass, folk, acoustic music. A man named Floyd, whose profession couldn’t be further from anything related to the cutting, shaping, trimming or styling of hair, met one day with 3 other gentlemen whose profession are, in fact, within the realm of barbery to form a folk and bluegrass super-group of mayhem on a path towards chaos and destruction of all things not acoustic and awesome. Some restrictions apply.

While Jeff Lazaroff puts out records and plays gigs in St. Louis, MO, and David Lazaroff does the same in Austin, TX, they maintain their collaboration long-distance, performing together throughout both regions. They are joined by a cast of exceptional musicians, making music that really hits the spot!
The Northwoods are an acoustic duo with heart, soul and talent. The music of The Northwoods has a wondrous secret hidden within their gentle harmonies. This happy, hidden, magic is the authentic creative friendship that exists between Jeremy Shanas and Eli Palnik. They have been friends since childhood, always playing, singing, laughing and making music while sharing their combined youthful summers in The North Woods of Wisconsin. Their sound is pure and true, sunny and joyous, gentle and real. Only artists who have become brothers can make music like this.
The Northwoods sing gentle wisdom wrapped in the warm sounds of their amazingly relaxing music. They are the perfect example of American music returning to its senses. The Northwoods invite you to listen with your heart and hear with your soul. Absorb their sweet words and music deep within your truest self and you will have made two new friends.

Jason & The Beast performs spoken word with a DJ. It is a Jekyll and Hyde story of poetry and hip-hop battling it out in the mind of one man. Jason Braun, poet/actor was the frontman for the experimental hip-hop group Jupiter Jazz. Jason selected, cajoled, and bribed veteran St. Louis musicians from such bands as The Floating City, Ghost in Light, Jupiter Jazz, Arts and Sciences, and Ruhig to produce and co-produce the beats for the forthcoming album “The Beast in the Bookhouse.” The album is a full-length experiment of sonnets, hip-hop, genera-defying groves, and exerts from Shakespearean monologues over congos and Atari-synth.

Anna Vogelzang is unavoidably soulful. she has major vocals. she was a vocal major. anna vogelzang has gotten a lot of crap for this blurb saying she doesn’t like dancing. it’s just that it’s fun for awhile and then it gets a little bit too much for her. it’s just that really she’s pretty bad at it, also. so anna vogelzang doesn’t really like dancing although she appreciates those who do. she can make a really good burrito and loves colorful shoes.
Emilyn “cupcake punk” Brodsky is a 22 year old singer-songwriter who couldn’t bring herself to learn how to play the guitar, so instead she plays the ukulele. She writes simple songs about complex feelings and is a big fan of tight harmonies and aggressive charm.

“Tending to upset the mind and the balance of senses, Acoustic Destruction can be intoxicating and stupefying. However, the music remains tightly constructed, and the songwriting smart, and it burns and soothes going down much like a straight shot of whiskey, which happens to be the bands favorite poison.” -The Breeze, Harrisonburg, VA

RIVERBEND – an experimental Newgrass band from Boulder Colorado. They mix Funk, Disco, Ska, and Reggae, while honoring the traditional styles of Bluegrass. So the band grows…

Isaac Hayden’s music is acoustic rock with a twist of blues, folk, and pop. With haunting vocal melodies, his honesty will drag you in and leave you craving more. Fans have compared him to Sting, Jack Johnson, Martin Sexton, and Jeff Buckeley. http://isaachayden.com
With influences such as Jimi Hendrix and Cream, it’s no wonder Foster McGinty and his funk/rock vision earn the title of “power trio.” The music is a raw combination of colorfull riffs draped over funky grooves that entices a closet dancer to the floor. Lyrically, Foster has been described as Jimi Hendrix meets Woody Guthrie. He draws on everyday emotions and presents them through thought-provoking stories, told with illustrative words.
Live shows are as compelling visually as they are musically–the energy shared on stage with drummer David Butler and bassist Seth Myers seems to project with the same intensity as the music. All three musicians share, smiles, laughs, and admiration as they take things to higher levels. Their jams display chemistry, musical capacity and diversity.
