Listen carefully and you will hear echoes of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and James Taylor as they collide with the 21st century. Elijah Palnik and Jeremy Shanas are taking American music in a new direction. The Northwoods restore the beauty of poetry to its rightful place in today’s music through rich, soulful vocal harmonies and an occasional dose of funky, percussive rhythms.

“They sing about a hope surrounding life and an optimism that never dies, not even with youth. Shanas and Palnik are bringing a force and vitality to folk music that hasn’t been heard in decades.”
Drawing on the sounds of Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, and CSNY, Annie and the Beekeepers is a folk and country inspired trio that met at Berklee College of Music in December 2006. When Annie Lynch (lead vocal, guitar), Ken Woodward (upright bass), and Alexandra Spalding (cello, vocals) first began playing together in living rooms and basements around Boston, the mysterious disappearance of bee colonies throughout the world was receiving a great deal of attention in the media. The Bee has long been a symbol for hard work and community, and the Beekeepers were inspired to preserve and promote those same qualities by way of music and their role in the music community.

After forming in January 2008 in Lawrence, KS, they’ve gone from rocking house parties in their hometown to sharing the stage and collaborating with the likes of Galactic, Lotus, Perpetual Groove, Particle, edIT (Glitch Mob), Vibesquad, EOTO, Euforquestra, and many others in countless venues all over the Midwest. Their shows are an exercise in groove exploration, as they improvise their way through funk, hip-hop, and electronic music, bending and molding beats in new ways every night. Nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is planned, and no one performance is ever the same as another.

That’s the deep-down straight-to-the-gut burn I experienced when I first listened to the new Greyhounds album, Liberty. I’ve been familiar with the band and their loose, laid-back soul-jazz groove for several years, so imagine my surprise when I was greeted with a much dirtier, more rockin’ sound than I’d ever expect from this young Texas trio.”
Formed in 2008, Brown Bottle Fever is one of the hottest new bands in the St. Louis area. Their unique blend of jazz, blues, rock, and funk produces danceable beats anyone can enjoy. Original lyrics and diverse sounds transpire to catchy hooks and smiling faces. Patrons take pleasure in the translucent harmonies created by the rhythmic syncopation of the bands instruments and vibrant vocals.

Jeff and David Lazaroff are the songwriting and harmonizing brothers of the band, but a crack rhythm section of drummer Grover Stewart and bassist Teddy Brookins, as well as virtuoso keyboards by Mo Egeston, expand the sound beyond just twangy roots. Their latest album, American Artifact, features psychedelic and indie rock elements, while deepening the brothers’ original songwriting. But one listen– with its stinging and expressive pedal steel, plaintive melodies, waltz and shuffle rhythms and close harmonies — makes clear its affection for and mastery of American roots idioms. It’s a connection that has served the band well as it’s built an audience in Austin, Texas, where brother David has lived over the last ten years. This year the brothers decided to bring it all back home to St. Louis and have put together one of the more striking, tight and steady bands in town.”

The Colorado-bred quintet combines the elements of Mandolin, Fiddle, Acoustic Guitar, Upright Bass, Drums and Vocals to explore the musical boundaries of multiple genres to fuel their own mixture of original music and innovative cover song interpretations. Whether playing an intimate encore, acoustic and unplugged in the crowd, or surfing on top of the upright bass, WhiteWater Ramble delivers a powerful and memorable live performance.

“I believe in songs and I believe in communication.” says Army Of Me singer Vince Scheuerman. It’s simple, and it’s evident in the music of Army Of Me. It’s all about the songs. And Army of Me’s debut CITIZEN speaks those songs from the heart, with the feeling that less is more. It’s more reminiscent of early Oasis or The Verve, and R.E.M than quirkily trendy indie pop, as Army of Me continues to build from their humble Washington DC indie roots.

Regardless, it’s clear their swaggered ruckus pop channels dead folk musicians galore. Despite the ghostly origins of their handle, the Mumlers’ live appearances tend to turn into lively celebrations, with the outfit dancing about the stage. Their repertoire of instruments rivals any philharmonic’s and includes guitars, drums, upright bass, various keyboards, euphonium, French horn, trumpet, clarinet, tambourine, pedal steel, and recently, eagle whistles from Mexico.” -Alex Felsinger, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Led by fiery front-woman Erin Zindle (called “Highly Impressive” by USA TODAY), they put on a show that is designed to engage the audience on many levels – to get people thinking, listening and dancing. As the band’s founder and songwriter, Zindle is like a bright excited tour guide through a beautiful foreign world of sights and sounds.

The musical roots of The Ragbirds sound are complex – with Gypsy, Middle-Eastern, Americana, Rock, and Latin influences, all stirred with a Celtic fiddler’s bow. In live performances the band incorporates variations on traditional African drum pieces, each member trading their instrument for a hand drum. The Ragbirds craft their songs carefully weaving joy and hope into honest lyrics, while keeping an ear always open to improvisation.”

Tommy, on a first-name basis with practically anyone cool in Saint Louis, has always hung on the fringes. He is to jazz as Uncle Tupelo was to country-western or Steve Earle to bluegrass. He possesses the schooling (both formal and hard-knocks) as well as the “chops” of a great jazzman… The basic truths of Delta-blues, swing, Gospel, and Bohemia are deeply rooted in Tommy’s songwriting psyche. Like Randy Newman or Tom Waits (who seldom appear in the same sentence), his cooking belies his ingredients. He may not be “Chasin’ the Bird”, but he’s certainly flippin’ the bird as a top-rate improviser. In this aspect at least, Tommy embodies the original spirit of jazz. His blues, his bounce, and his ballads rival great musicians from any era.”

Lucas Paine

Lucas Paine was born an army brat in North Carolina, but the family moved north, and he grew up in Alaska; fishing camps and boats during the summer, playing music and trying to stay warm in winter. Lucas likes trees and snow, high places, warm nights, and cold, salty water. There are birds and lions in his music.
Abi Robins

with some special guests at live performances:
Bob Kaat-Wholert: Guitars and all things good!
Sean Renner: Guitar, Vocals, Keys
Wes Burrows: Drums

Sean Renner

Creating music that his listeners describe as Acoustic/Electronic Experimentation, Renner pushes the limits of the acoustic singer/songwriter paradigm, but yet remains accessible, personal and intimate. His influences range from Radiohead to Beethoven, Bjork to Sufjan Stevens, and he elegantly displays each in a creative blend of musical and technical prowess. Playing the roles of musician, producer, and engineer he completed four full length albums, three EPs, and scores for several short films including a piece for the film “Love Overdue,” winner of the Best Original Score award at the 2005 Greensboro 48-hour Film Competition.

“It is the dawn of an age of digital wizardry where gadgets seem to surge in song, congealing in an amalgamation of buzzes, beeps and blips. The pulsing of machines and pounding of concrete and steel in symphonic collage power our world. J.Wail rises to the call of the sonic traffic controller, poised behind a palette of electronic devices with his Telecaster in hand. The dance floor becomes the launch pad where he fuses live instrumentation with organic electronica propelling mind, soul and booty into the upper stratosphere of sound. In the resonance of music and technology, J. Wail melds the sounds of tomorrow with the power of now into a bumping, party anthem for modern mankind.”
Whether with his band ‘the Collection’, or solo-acoustic, Lucas always puts on a high energy, fun show. The original music is a progressive rock blending pop, rock, blues, funk, soul, hip-hop. Just when you think it couldn’t get more eclectic, the boy drops a song completely in Spanish. ¡Simon! After two years and hundreds of shows as the front man for Austin’s LUCASCOOKUS, Lucas took a step back to focus energy on the direction of his career. Now, in the writing stages of a full length album Lucas plans to work with producer Dave Percefull of Yellow Dog/ 5am studios in Austin.

She then went in search of a band. She tabbed Greg Turner, a very gifted multi-instrumentalist as her lead guitarist. However, she still needed some meat and potatoes to fill out the sound. Similarly, the Meramec Cannonball and Story were musical free agents, having been a rhythm section for over a year for three different songwriters and were looking for something new. They heard Millie’s solo work, were equally impressed, and signed on soon after, thus completing the group as you now see and hear it.

By Roy Kasten of the Riverfront Times and KDHX 88.1 FM St. Louis, MO
