After quickly rising in the jam and electronic scenes in the midwest and southeast, EP3 has taken a hold of new technologies and traditional improvisational elements to create a progressive, fresh take on livetronica. Risks and rewards…the application of technical and melodic songwriting with deep grooves and all sorts of experimentation. It’s been a good two years, playing packed theater and club gigs with such artists as: Shpongle, Moe., Parliment Funkadelic, Pretty Lights, Benga, Bassnectar, Pnuma Trio, Mickey Hart, Orchard Lounge, Big Gigantic, Telepath, Ana Sia, Glitch Mob, Raq, U-Melt, M80 Dubstation, Bela Fleck, Eliot Lipp, Sub Swara, DubCouncious, Alex B, Joe Nice, Starkey, as well as official afterparties for STS9, Umphrey’s Mcgee, and the Disco Biscuits…including 2 shows with sit ins from Jon Gutwillig of the Disco Biscuits and a late night set at Trinumeral. BIG things happening at the EP3 camp…

Dirk Quinn Band

Dirk Quinn is a Philadelphia based guitarist who has utilized nearly a decade of steady performing to develop a unique and progressive style – one that sits somewhere between jazz, funk and rock. Initially attracted to the guitar as a teenager after being introduced to classic rock giants such as Led Zeppelin and The Who, Quinn’s thirst for the unique and bizarre soon had him jamming along to the more radical and daring Mahavishnu Orchestra and the humorous, bass-laden noise of Primus. Playing virtually non-stop with countless musical projects afforded him ample opportunity to hone his chops.

Cronus

Cronus started with the founding members, Matt and Casey, writing songs in a mini studio. The songs and ideas seemed to meet at an organic, but very rock oriented approach. From that day on the band Cronus was born.

The style is an eclectic mix of the minds with various influences. Whether it be soulful southern style leads, or indie/progressive rock, to funk and r&b, to blues and jazz.

A Monday evening full of jam, just for you… See you there!

Categorization be damned, the Madison-based five piece, Steez, consisting of Matt Williams (keyboards/synthesizers/accordion), Steve Neary (guitar and vocals), Rob Bessert (drums), Chris Sell (bass), and Andrzej Benkowski (saxophone, oboe, and violin) is — in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions – a funk band, a jamband, a fusion band, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case.

Churning out their self-described Creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities – Steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the Midwest. After receiving repeated acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Genialistid (Estonia), Steez hit the studio and released their first full length album, Creepfunk Crusade, in August 09 with independent label, Mason Jar Records.

Hoping to carve out a niche in the competitive jamband landscape, what really sets Steez apart is the camaraderie and endearing sense of humor. The band’s humble beginnings include getting banned for life from a venue after their first ever live performance, maneuvering a moped accident involving a parked car, and cruising the Midwest in the inspired 35 foot band bus, “Big Brown.” While it’s the original songs and taut musicianship that initially grab both fans’ and critics’ attention, the band’s personality keeps it.

Steez is currently enjoying success from their debut album which has been nominated for Home Grown Music Network’s album of the year, the album charted on both the Homegrown Music Network Radio Charts and the Jambands.com Radio Charts, peaking at #19 and #23, respectively. Steez was featured in the December 09 issue of Relix as an band “on the verge,” and most recently Steez was named one of the 10 most influential bands to come out of Madison in the last decade. The band is again poised to hop on the bus and build upon the success they’ve garnered from grinding it out on the road.

From the foothills of Appalachia a new musical combo has appeared; grown from seeds of the folk, blues, and bluegrass found abundant in the Carolinas, yet shaped by the undeniable power of rock and roll. Known as The New Familiars, these five gentlemen combine an amazing passion for harmony with multi-instrumental talent and unusual storytelling abilities.

Currently touring in support of their six-song EP ‘The Storm’ and a recently released 7″ vinyl (featuring their original tune ‘Mill’s River’ with a re-interpretation of Smokey Robinson’s classic ‘My Girl’), they’ve taken the east coast music scene by force. Drawing raucous club crowds from Boston to Tuscaloosa while shining bright on the festival circuit grace of a fresh and distinct new sound, the buzz about the band is palpable and growing.

While describing their songwriting as “folk music from the core”, the band has constantly stretched the boundaries of ‘genre labels’. Since their debut in late 2006, they’ve fused the multitudes of musical influences that each member brings to the table onto a foundation built upon traditional instruments such as resonator guitar, mandolin, banjo and harmonica. Yet glimpses of new material hint towards even broader musical horizons while still maintaining – and even reinforcing – the unique sound that has so defined the band.

All this, most especially when combined with their intense live performances, serve as signs pointing to one very clear statement: The New Familiars are a powerful swell in a new wave of honest, roots-derived rock music sweeping the nation.

The Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories between blues and bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stompin’ fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but whistle their own tunes, layering in rich textures and decidedly modern energy to forge a new sound.

They fit best among musicians like Langhorne Slim, Gillian Welch, or Adrienne Young and Little Sadie (with whom they’ve shared the stage) – deft musicians making a name for themselves by creating their own particular permutation of traditional forms. Yet the Steel Wheels share much with new Americana favorites like the Avett Brothers or Old Crow Medicine Show, with charisma that causes toes to tap and heads to nod, audiences hanging on their every word. Like those bands, The Steel Wheels have broad appeal. And they count among their fans former Statler Brother Jimmy Fortune and indie folk darlings Over the Rhine.

The four-piece band is based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where multi-instrumentalist Jay Lapp was born and took inspiration from church hymns and folk fests, and where Trent Wagler has been a scene staple for nearly a decade. Lapp was touring with several successful Midwest bands when he and Wagler crossed paths in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and a musical partnership began. The two are joined by upright bassist Brian Dickel and fiddler Eric Brubaker to form the Steel Wheels. The band shines exceptionally in their live shows, and their palpable chemistry translates easily to Red Wing. Just listen to the exceptional four-part harmonies that support and accentuate Wagler’s scratchy tenor, which has been compared to that of Darrel Scott. Brubaker’s fiddle, both lively and evocative, suits the band exactly, and Dickel’s upright bass grounds the outfit. Jay Lapp’s signature mandolin style is remarkable and unmistakable.

The Steel Wheels have built a following from the East Coast to the Midwest and beyond, appearing at Americana festivals such as the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Festival, Floydfest, Folk Alliance, and Appalachian Uprising. Wagler and Lapp also regularly take a duo show to Ireland and have appeared with Peter Rowan at the ‘Ards International Guitar Festival.

In keeping with their music that takes a traditional idea on a modern adventure, Wagler and Lapp’s organized a week-long, 300-mile bicycle tour last year. Not only did they pedal themselves through the mountains of Virginia to seven gigs in seven days, they hauled their own gear the whole way, with one bicycle custom-framed for travel and another fitted with a trailer. It’s one more example that with inherent skill and energy, trust in the value of simplicity and a marked talent for taking something old-fashioned and making it relevant for today is one of The Steel Wheels’ greatest strengths.

Since 2003, Illinois-based singer-songwriter Dan Hubbard has released four albums and toured extensively through the Midwest and both coasts. In the process, he’s built a strong fan base, become a refined songwriter and earned critical acclaim for his efforts. With its foundation in the classic sounds of Tom Petty, Van Morrison, Neil Young and Jackson Browne, Hubbard’s music incorporates folk, country, blues and even a little funk. With a dynamic and powerful voice, Hubbard carries songs of love, loss and soul searching (and occasionally getting drunk enough to forget it all). Like the influential front-men before him, Hubbard delivers a message that people can relate to in good times and bad.

In 2008, the Humadors joined Hubbard on the road. That fall, they released their acclaimed self-titled debut- a collection of songs showcasing graceful lyrics, vibrant melodies and innovative sound. Dan Hubbard and the Humadors expect to release a new album this summer.

Come on out to Pop’s Blue Moon and grab the debut EP from Butcher Holler. 5 songs for 5 Bucks!!

HOLLER!!!

Los Angeles-based artist Jeremiah (Sammartano) and the Red Eyes started in the Southern California coffeehouses and bars, picking up sounds and ideas along the way and later mixed them up with the song ideas in his head. What came out was a blend of the Delta Blues and old folk songs, Tom Waits and the Replacements, some Willie Nelson twang and some good old garage rock and roll – and a whole lot of other things..

Bob’s Scratchy Showcase is Bob Reuter’s new monthly music review featuring several unique live performers and special guests. LUCE (San Francisco, CA) will also be performing an early show from 8-9pm.

Ashley Raines grew up in the Midwest and began running away from home almost as early as he could walk. By the age of fourteen he was hitchhiking from his home in Kansas to Oklahoma City. He hopped boxcars and taught himself any instrument he could get his hands on, recording his songs on four-track reel-to-reel machines which he sold while performing on the street. Raines has released seven studio albums and one live album.

Young St.Louis singer/songwriter Riley James sings with a voice worn by whiskey and late nite wanderings. He brought his hardscrabble, acoustic tunes to the interstate for a live session. Sounds “like a dead-end road…”

Salvation has the general meaning of liberation from straitened circumstances or from other evils, and of a translation into a state of freedom and security. Jason Sipe and Shannon Kiel use experimental rock & pop music to express themselves, and they’ve relocated to where it all started for them musically: St. Louis, MO.

Luce’s history reaches back to 2001. Their first record, which was self titled, gained immediate attention on Bay Area radio stations such as San Francisco’s KFOG. The album’s single, “Good Day” was soon picked up in Hollywood and appeared in movies such as How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and 13 Going On 30, and on television shows like The O.C. and Alias. In 2003, Luce earned the California Music Award for “Outstanding Debut Album.” In order to continue promoting the album the band fervently toured the US playing alongside bands like Sixpence, None The Richer and Goo Goo Dolls.

If it takes a village to raise a child, George Stathakes must have had some really weird neighbors. Raised in Gardendale, AL, a small conservative suburb of Birmingham, Stathakes was exposed at a young age to a blend of Cat Stevens and traditional Greek music by his mother and weaned on a steady diet of outlaw country singers like George Jones and Johnny Cash by his father.

His lyrical prowess reflects his biting sarcasm and wit, but there are still hints of something sinister lurking beneath, like the villains he idolized as a child, with the role-playing and theatrics of the Phantom of the Opera. However, his youth and curiosity still render his present songwriting form a constantly shape-shifting entity, a voracious beast that consumes anything tasty in its path. Be sure to hear him while he’s at his hungriest.

Tom Goss offers up dynamic acoustic rock featuring muscular guitar, hooky melodies and a uniquely powerful voice. If the 26-year-old has any patron saints, they are Jack Johnson, Damien Rice, Ben Folds, and Joss Stone. Since April 2006, when he released his self-produced debut, Naked Without, Tom has played scores of coffeehouses, bars, gay pride festivals and other events—honing his skills along the way.

With the January 2008 release of his second CD, Rise, Tom demonstrates just how far he’s come. The six songs showcase his stylistic flexibility, from the urgent growl of “Morning Sun” to the sweet and unadorned “King of Something Right.” The recent music video for “Rise” barreled its way to #2 on MTV’s LOGO and stuck around 8 weeks.

Kort McCumber weaves a rich and diverse tapestry of musical experience, skill and energy into each and every one of his many musical endeavors. A classically trained pianist & cellist (he learned from his mom, Joy Myers, who played for the Jacksonville Symphony for more than two decades) today Kort plays guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, piano, bouzouki, cello, bass, and more. He’s back in the studio this year with a “really exciting project for me,” as he says. “Not quite as country as the last record – a little more back to my folk roots. Of course I’ll still play the country and bluegrass live. I love that stuff. But the time is right to record some other stuff, a little more social commentary and a little more direct to the times.”

Drawing on over 30 years of combined experience, the band began writing, recording, and performing in 2005. In 2007, the band added two new players—Wes VanAntwerp and Diana Garles. Since then, She Swings, She Sways has spent almost every minute together – sharing a house and completing five tours of the Midwest, playing over 200 shows. Their travels have resulted in many new friends and fans; a few broken hearts; and the rescue of Sassafras, a horse stuck in a frozen Kansas pond. And even though the road can be hard, they’re always able to find a girl’s bed to sleep in (though she may not be in it), and her mom usually makes them muffins in the morning.

When the band is asked what “style” of music that they play, a common answer is “Midwestern” music. She Swings, She Sways’ range of influences is wide, combining rocking two-beat stomp, soulful lovelorn lyrics, and lilting pop melodies.

She Swings, She Sways is very proud of their Iowa roots. Still, they all hope to soon leave home for the long haul and take their music anywhere they can find a meal, a bed, and some open ears.

“A night of music and hang” with members of Messy Jiverson, join us!

Listen carefully and you will hear echoes of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and James Taylor as they collide with the 21st century. Elijah Palnik and Jeremy Shanas are taking American music in a new direction. The Northwoods restore the beauty of poetry to its rightful place in today’s music through rich, soulful vocal harmonies and an occasional dose of funky, percussive rhythms.

“They sing about a hope surrounding life and an optimism that never dies, not even with youth. Shanas and Palnik are bringing a force and vitality to folk music that hasn’t been heard in decades.”
When Annie Lynch (lead vocal, guitar), Ken Woodward (upright bass), and Alexandra Spalding (cello, vocals) first began playing together in living rooms and basements around Boston, the mysterious disappearance of bee colonies throughout the world was receiving a great deal of attention in the media. The Bee has long been a symbol for hard work and community, and the Beekeepers were inspired to preserve and promote those same qualities by way of music and their role in the music community.

But before they can do so, they’re calling out to all of their hometown fans to come out and show support, a fun(d)raising show where it all started, Pop’s Blue Moon.

There is a $5 suggested donation, and anyone who donates more will receive a download of their choice from Messy J’s catalog. We’re really proud of these homegrown recording junkies, the power of their live show is proven here in St. Louis, and we know they’ll do the same in every city they hit across the U.S.! Join us at the moon to raise some much needed funds for them to do it right (merchandise, promotional materials, gas, etc.). They’ll be doing an old school set, a handful of songs that haven’t been played live since 08′!

Thanks for supporting local, original music.

After forming in January 2008 in Lawrence, KS, they’ve gone from rocking house parties in their hometown to sharing the stage and collaborating with the likes of Galactic, Lotus, Perpetual Groove, Particle, edIT (Glitch Mob), Vibesquad, EOTO, Euforquestra, and many others in countless venues all over the Midwest. Their shows are an exercise in groove exploration, as they improvise their way through funk, hip-hop, and electronic music, bending and molding beats in new ways every night. Nothing is pre-recorded, nothing is planned, and no one performance is ever the same as another.

That’s the deep-down straight-to-the-gut burn I experienced when I first listened to the new Greyhounds album, Liberty. I’ve been familiar with the band and their loose, laid-back soul-jazz groove for several years, so imagine my surprise when I was greeted with a much dirtier, more rockin’ sound than I’d ever expect from this young Texas trio.”
Formed in 2008, Brown Bottle Fever is one of the hottest new bands in the St. Louis area. Their unique blend of jazz, blues, rock, and funk produces danceable beats anyone can enjoy. Original lyrics and diverse sounds transpire to catchy hooks and smiling faces. Patrons take pleasure in the translucent harmonies created by the rhythmic syncopation of the bands instruments and vibrant vocals.
